What's Closed on Columbus Day in Chicago?

Find out what government offices, mail service, trash pickup, banks and other businesses are doing for the holiday this year.

CHICAGO, IL — Columbus Day is one of those federal holidays that has a habit of sneaking up on people. Observed on the second Monday of October in the United States, the holiday, which falls on Oct. 11 this year, doesn't land on the same date annually. It also doesn't help people mark off the year like other holidays, such as Memorial Day (the unofficial beginning of the summer) and Labor Day (the unofficial end of the summer).

Another reason for Columbus Day's stealth status is the fact that it's not always clear what's open and closed on that date, even though its current observance has been a federal holiday since 1971.

Patch has put together a quick list of what some Chicago offices, agencies, services and businesses are open and closed on Columbus Day 2016:

  • City, State and Federal Offices: Closed
  • Public Schools: Closed
  • Trash Service: It will run as scheduled if Monday is your normal garbage pickup day.
  • Libraries: Open
  • Banks: Most will be closed for the holiday, but hours can vary depending on locations. Check with your branch.
  • U.S. Post Office: Closed, and there will be no mail delivery service.
  • Public Transportation: Metra will run on a normal schedule, as will the CTA.
  • Retailers, Restaurants, Bars and Other Businesses: Open, but you might want to check the hours of small, locally run businesses.
