Woman Killed In Shooting Leaves Behind Infant Twins, Young Son
The father of her children was collecting donations to pay for her funeral after she was one of three killed Sunday, police said.
CHICAGO, IL — A man is collecting donations to bury the mother of his children after she was killed early Sunday, according to Chicago police.
Mercedes Tavares was one of three people shot to death just before 2:30 a.m. in the 5500 block of West School Street, police said.
“She was taken from us in a senseless crime,” Miguel Gordillo wrote in a GoFundMe he started to pay for Tavares’ funeral. As of Monday evening, it had received about $7,000 in donations.

Tavares was 24, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, which reported the shooting happened after a fight at a nearby bar and identified the other victims as 50-year-old Ricky Vera and 26-year-old Mario Pozuelos. A 25-year-old woman was also shot and in critical condition, police said.
Tavares leaves behind infant twins and a young son, her friend, Nikai Moya, wrote in a Facebook post.

No one was immediately in custody in connection with the shooting and detectives were investigating, according to police.
