As part of an annual celebration to commemorate Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Jumpstart, a national early education organization, hosted its signature reading event with Mandi Mohammed, wife of Chicago Bulls player Nazr Mohammed, last Saturday, March 2 at Roosevelt University.
The event convened more than 700 children and families for a day of reading and Dr. Seuss themed games and crafts. Mandi Mohammed read her favorite Dr. Seuss book, The Sneetches with preschool aged children from several Chicago Public Schools and community based preschools in
Woodlawn, North Lawndale, Austin and Rogers Park. Special guest Brandon Bodor, Executive Director of the Serve Illinois Commission, was also in attendance, in addition to 50 corporate volunteers from Chase.
Since 2010, Jumpstart’s Midwest region has hosted this inspiring day of learning to reinforce the language and literacy skills children gain in Jumpstart sssions, which take
place 1,000 times each week nationwide. Jumpstart currently trains nearly 300 college students and community volunteers, known as “Corps members” to serve nearly
900 children in 45 classrooms throughout Chicago.
