Be Great! You Deserve It!

So many people settle for less than what they can be because we don't know we can be great. Inspired by a talk I heard about the journey to greatness, I share my thoughts.

I had a wonderful experience visiting Reverend Zaki's church this week. He spoke about greatness... what it means and how we achieve greatness in life.

I've always been fascinated by change- particularly how people change, but Jaime's recent battle with cancer has really made me more pensive and reflective.  It definitely brought our mortality into the forefront of my mind, and that begs the question "What will you do with your life?"

Let me first share a very generic summary of Reverend Zaki's sermon. I wish I would have taken notes, because Jaime and I have been talking about it since Sunday, and I wish there were a way to replay it in our minds... I'm sure we missed so very much.

He illustrated a majestic mountain, with a summit that reached well into the sky.  At the base of the mountain were foothills. Taken on their own, they might have appeared to be mountains... It required a climb, had an ascent and a descent... but when taken in relation to the mountain, it was clear they were merely foothills.  He used this image to illustrate that so very many of us are lured into climbing those foothills...  We reach the top, and we think we have achieved success/greatness... but with perspective, with the right goal, we could have journeyed up the REAL mountain, reached its summit and known true greatness. It may APPEAR we are on the top of the world, but in essence, we're nowhere close...

Just that metaphor... so very much to consider... how things in isolation can never tell us the truth... the foothill away from the mountain may appear to be grand... how easy it is.
