Check Fraud Scheme Centers On Chicago Heights Post Office

The owner of Enzo's Beef and Sausage said his banking account was recently drained of $15,000.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL – The United States Post Office Inspector General is investigating a fraud scheme that victims believe involve a Chicago Heights Post Office. According to CBS 2, investigators believe someone is ripping customers off at the post office with fake checks that may have all come through the building.

Kyle Hallberg, who owns Enzo’s Beef and Sausage, told the TV station his bank account was recently drained of $15,000. However, he said he wasn’t the only victim. Fraudulent checks were also written against other several nearby businesses who recently had done business with the post office.

“I think it happened at the Chicago Heights Post Office – that’s the common denominator,” Hallberg said in an interview with the TV station.

A 79-year-old woman told CBS 2 that she, too, was ripped off after putting her check to the gas company in a mail slot at the post office. Her $160 check managed to increase to nearly $5,000. When she looked at the check after it was deposited, she noticed it was made out to a woman she didn't recognize.

“I’m not putting anything in the mailbox that’s going to the post office,” the woman told the TV station.
