CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL -Chicago Heights Police Officers are growing beards again in a collaborative effort to raise awareness for children in need and to support local families.

In 2016, for the first time in police department history, Chief Rogers allowed CHPD officers to grow beards with the agreement that it had to be for a great cause. During that winter, Chicago Heights Police Officers grew beards, raised money internally and donated all the proceeds to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

This year, officers are going to grow beards to bring attention to two great fundraising causes:

Toys For Community Children

Officers are asking for donations of new (unopened) toys or financial considerations. Once they collect enough donations, they then we will purchase toys for children in the community for the holiday season. These will be children of families experiencing financial hardships, police said.

Lurie Children's Hospital

Police are also raising funds to make a financial contribution to Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago. These donations will assist the hospital in providing medical treatment to children, which spares the family the financial burden.

"We are asking for EVERYONE's help for these two great causes," the police department wrote on its CHPD Beards for Kids website. "Your charitable donation at any level will assist us in helping children in need this holiday season."
