CHSD170’s Roosevelt School Celebrates Reading

Roosevelt School de CHSD170 celebra la lectura

CHSD170's Roosevelt School has spent the month of March engaging students in appreciating literacy and the importance of reading in the educational environment.

The month began celebrating Read Across America while utilizing the tenets of the Reading is Fundamental literacy network to engage students in understanding the importance of reading. Reading is Fundamental's various programs and partnerships that provide opportunities for children and their families to experience the life-changing impact of reading.

As part of the experience, students watched live read-a-louds with children's authors. They also partnered with school staff to participate in Dress Up Like a Storybook Character Day and represent many superheroes and other familiar characters.

The end of the month saw the school hosting a Family Reading Night centered around the book The Bad Seed by Jory John. The book focuses on making good choices and persevering through difficult times.

Families completed four activities together; writing connections to the story, making a "Bad Seed" puppet, planting sunflower seeds, and writing self-affirmations on paper-mache seeds.

"We saw many smiles and heard a lot of laughing as families worked together," said Karlin Ritter, Roosevelt's Reading Specialist.

"We had 70 families attend the event, along with many staff members who helped make the night successful. It was wonderful to have families back in the building experiencing literacy together, and I look forward to many similar opportunities in the future."

Roosevelt's Assistant Principal, Jennifer Rodriguez, added to Ritter's thoughts, saying,"It was a wonderful evening seeing our students with their families participating in the well-thought-out activities our team planned and prepped. Their smiles and laughter warmed our hearts and brought so much joy."
