Dolton Firefighter Dies While On Duty
Veteran Dolton firefighter Lawrence Matthews died of a cardiac arrest while fighting a fire in Harvey Saturday afternoon.

DOLTON, IL -- A firefighter who friends say "loved his job" died while on duty in the south suburbs on Saturday. Dolton firefighter Lawrence Matthews, 36 died from a cardiac arrest he suffered while assisting with putting out a fire in nearby Harvey around 1:30 p.m., according to various media reports.
Matthews appeared to have had shortness of breath and began leaning on a fence for support, ABC-7-Chicago reported. He collapsed on scene and was taken to Ingalls Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A police and fire procession escorted his body to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Matthews had been with the Dolton Fire Department since 2008, according to a WGN-TV report. He was often involved with the community.
