Gimme 5: Rich Central Pitcher is High on Her New Sports Life

In her second year playing softball, Daivonya High is learning to deal with the pressure that comes with being a varsity pitcher for the Olympians, not to mention learning the ins-and-outs of her new trade.

Daivonya High isn’t new to the spotlight. She's been a standout on Rich Central’s volleyball team he last two seasons.

So, when Rich Central softball coach Mina Data needed someone to step in and fill the role of the team’s ace varsity pitcher, she had no reservations about selecting High.

“She’s a player that comes out and tries to do the best that she can,” Data said. “She’s very coachable and she listens to every direction and applies all skills required for pitching. She is very dedicated and optimistic.”

In recent years, pitching hasn’t been a strength for Rich Central, but Data thinks High might be able to change that trend. In her first two starts, High recorded nine strikeouts.

“She’s kind of just taken the role and run with it,” Data said. “She just keeps getting better and better every day she comes out on the field and practices.”

But there will be a learning curve for High, who is starting only her second year of pitching. She still needs to become more accurate and develop complementary pitches needed to compete at the varsity level.
