Girls Basketball: H-F Fought the Law and Law's Team Won
Marian Catholic 72, Homewood-Flossmoor 58. Simone Law simply wouldn't let her team lose, scoring 22 points and collecting 16 rebounds to help the Spartans turn a third-quarter nail-biter into a runaway victory.
The Hot Read: Homewood-Flossmoor went ahead 41-37 with 5:12 remaining on three free throws from Charnelle Reed and a putback basket by Lauren Parker. Marian Catholic responded, though, with a 13-2 run to finish the third quarter and H-F wouldn't get any closer than 50-45 at the start of the fourth quarter as the Spartans pulled away to notch a 72-58 girls basketball victory on Monday in play at the Class 4A Lincoln-Way North Sectional.
Patch's MVP: Marian Catholic's Simone Law proved to be way too much for Homewood-Flossmoor to handle. The Loyola University recruit did it with her scoring and her rebounding and seemingly always came up with a big play when her team needed it most. She also made seven of her final eight free throw attempts.
Key Stats: Marican picked up 20 points and 11 rebounds from its bench. Ashley Collins and Sydni Johnson both fouled out for Homewood-Flossmoor. Marian's Alana Ferry finally picked up her first field goal with 2:07 left. It was a big one as it pushed the Spartans to a 61-52 lead.

Quotable I: Marian Catholic coach Annie Basic-Byrne: "I just felt like we were a step below where we've been playing, and I'm not sure if that was a change in routine. But, look, they're teenagers and want to do the best they can. They didn't crack under pressure, that's the good news."
Quotable II: Homewood-Flossmoor coach Dana Noble: "The girls played their best. In the first half, they executed just like we wanted and stayed in the ballgame. In the second half, give some credit to Simone Law. Big players step up at big times and she found a way to put the ball in the basket and keep their momentum going."
Quotable III: More from Basic-Byrne: "(Charnelle Reed) played her heart out, but you expect that with a rival school. We didn't do the little things that make us who we are, but we pulled it out. We'll be here Thursday with our 'A' game."
Team Records: Marian Catholic: 29-4; Homewood-Flossmoor: 22-8.
What's Next: Marian Catholic faces Marist at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the Lincoln-Way North Sectional championship. Marist defeated Lincoln-Way East 55-38. Homewood-Flossmoor's season came to a close.
