The Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library provided an evening of autumnal adventure for all ages with hayrides through Steger. This traditional celebration of the Autumn harvest was just one event in the Library’s week long Fall Family Fun Fest. Though a bit wet, the weather cooperated and lent a true atmosphere of autumn to the proceedings. There were cool temperatures with the fragrance of fall in the air. Each trip throughout the village was filled to capacity and the passengers enjoyed being among friends and family and the sense of community brought about by this classic October activity.
The hayride route began at the Library and wound its way through village streets before stopping at the Steger Fire Station on Lewis Street. Once at the Fire Station, the Steger Fire Department let participants climb on both vintage and modern fire trucks, blow the trucks’ horns, and have an all around awesome time. The Fire Department also gave participants goodies upon the hay wagon’s departure from the station. From the Fire Station, the hayride meandered it’s way back to the Library where lively riders ended their trip.
The great success of the hayrides can be attributed to the community effort put forth. The Steger Fire Department not only opened their station, but also their hearts by providing goodies for all. Steger Emergency Management kept the hay wagon safe and on course. And last, but not least, a heartfelt thank you to Mr. David Bridges who provided the most essential element of the hayride, the hay.
