CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — A Chicago Heights baseball club is collecting shoes to help those in need across the world. The Homewood Heights Baseball Club began participating in the Sole to Soul project, which helps micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries get out of poverty, since just before Thanksgiving.

The project begins with collections of new and gently worn shoes, which are sold at a low price to micro-entrepreneurs in communities in need of proper footwear, according to a news release. The business owners then resell the shoes at an inexpensive price.

“It has been a good way to show our children the power of giving and to be grateful for what they have,” Jhames Holley, a pastor who is an officer with the baseball club, said.

So far the club has already donated three bags, approximately 75 pairs, of shoes. They have a goal to donate 200 pairs by March 1.

The public can help the effort by dropping off shoes at Churchill Elementary School, 1300 190th St. in Homewood during school hours and the Homewood Heights winter workouts on Wednesday evenings at Bloom High School’s fieldhouse.
