Marian Hopes to Start New Softball Streak

Spartans saw their 14-game winning streak end in dramatic fashion against rival Marist this week.

Marian Catholic’s softball team had been on quite a roll before Wednesday’s game against Marist—a 14-game winning streak, in fact.

On May 6, the Spartans pounded Kankakee 20-6, as Becca Stanton and Alex Nickel each knocked in three runs, while Julie Kistner, Jenny LaBella and Kelly Foley each had two RBIs.

On May 7, the Spartans pounded Nazareth 9-1 and 10-0, as Rachel Glenn went 4-for-4 and had four RBI in the opener and then pitched a two-hitter in the second game. Bri Clark led the Spartans in the second game with a homer and five RBIs. Becca Gray pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 in game one.

With first place in conference on the line, the Spartans had a home-and-home showdown with Marist. The Spartans rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to beat Marist 6-4 on Monday to extend Marian’s winning streak to 14 games.

But on Wednesday, Marist came back with a seventh-inning win of its own, a 6-5 thriller that was decided by a two-run home run. For Marian, Gray went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Wednesday’s loss put the Spartans’ record at 22-5 overall and 11-1 in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.

Bumpy Ride for Spartans’ Baseball Team

Marian Catholic’s baseball team has had a tough go of it in the last week.

The Spartans dropped a doubleheader to St. Viator last Saturday, losing both games by a score of 4-3.

They lost 6-2 to Nazareth on Monday, they lost 12-2 to Homewood-Flossmoor in five innings on Tuesday, they fell 7-3 to Nazareth on Wednesday despite a two-run home run by Josh Pieper, and they lost 7-6 to Beecher on Thursday despite Byron Munoz’s home run and three RBIs. 

Their seven-game losing streak dropped the Spartans’ record to 15-14 overall and 4-8 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Marian will look to stop the skid when they visit Carmel today for a doubleheader.

Marian Lacrosse Update

Marian’s girls lacrosse team destroyed Regina 22-0 on Wednesday as Emma Terrazas tallied five goals with three assists, and Beth O'Malley, Drew Tutor and Kristin Payne also recorded hat tricks. Hannah Conway had three assists, and Shelby Cosman added two goals, while Marian (11-6) got single scores from Alexis DiGiovanni, Anita Kunkes, Erin Morris and Olivia Giannetti.

The boys lacrosse team fell to 3-10 on the season with a 16-4 loss to Benet Academy. Bill Bening scored two goals and had two assists for the Spartans,

Playoffs Next for Marian Girls Soccer

Marian Catholic’s girls soccer team dropped its last two regular-season games, losing 2-0 to Carmel and 4-1 to H-F. The Spartans, who finished the season with a 3-8-5 record, will play Reavis in regional action Wednesday at Sandburg, at 6:30 p.m.

Spartans’ Boys Tennis Team Sizzles

Marian Catholic’s boys tennis team has been rolling as it heads into this weekend’s East Suburban Catholic Conference meet.

Last Saturday the Spartans beat St. Viator 4-1, as Nate Bodnar and Nico Moorman won at No. 2 doubles. On Monday, Marian beat Sandburg 5-2 as Julian Childers won at No. 1 singles. On Tuesday, the Spartany beat Lincoln-Way North 5-2 as Mitch Zavesky won at No. 1 singles while Bodnar and Josh Pinkus prevailed at No. 1 doubles.

The Spartans improved to 18-2 overall on the season and 7-1 in East Suburban Catholic Conference.

More Marian Notes

The boys track team took seventh place at Thursday’s conference meet at Carmel. The Spartans will be competing at the Bloom Township Sectional on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m. … Marian’s boys volleyball team lost to Benet on Tuesday and fell to Carmel on Thursday. Will Craft had 17 kills combined in the two matches for the Spartans (12-15 overall, 2-5 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference).

Tough Times for Bloom Township Baseball

The Blazing Trojans baseball team lost a heartbreaking 10-inning game to Rich East on Tuesday by a score of 3-2 and dropped a 5-2 decision to Rich Central on Thursday.

Bloom Township Softball Romps

The Blazing Trojans beat Crete-Monee 11-1 on Monday as Toni Formentini went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in the five-inning win. The Blazing Trojans improved to 12-10 overall and 8-3 in the Southland Conference.

Bloom Township Track Update

The Blazing Trojans’ boys squad took sixth in the Hinsdale Central Invite as Kaleb Williams won the 400-meter dash and Chris Kress won the 110-meter hurdles.

The girls squad will compete at the Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional this weekend with a chance to qualify for next weekend’s state competition at Eastern Illinois University.

Playoffs Next for Bloom Township Girls Soccer

The Blazing Trojans lost to Crete-Monee 3-2 on Tuesday. They are the 14th seed in the Mother McAuley Sectional and will open up regional play hosting Bogan on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

House, Clark Swing Hot Bats for Rich Central

The Olympians lost 14-7 on Monday to Crete-Monee to run their losing streak to three games, but they bounced back in a big way, beating Rich South 16-4 on Tuesday. Tyler House homered in all three of his at-bats in the six-inning win, including a grand slam and a pair of two-run shots. Kyle Clark was 4-for-4 with four RBI.

The Olympians then defeated Bloom Township 5-2 on Thursday as Garrett Spivey picked up his fourth win of the season and Clark went 3-for-3 with an RBI.
