Terry Boers, famed 670 Score Radio Announcer, Comes Home To Announce at his Old High School

Bloom Alumni Athletic Association (BAAA) brings home famous alums to motivate area needy kids

(Chicago Heights,IL) The Bloom Alumni Association (BAA) have expanded to include a new branch called the Bloom Alumni Athletic Association (BAAA). The mission of the BAA, which is to preserve and acknowledge Bloom Township High School ( BTHS) District 206’s history, is carried out through this new branch with the focus on Bloom’s athletic history. Today, The BAAA is an association designed to provide fundraising support, alumni relations activities, and community relations events; all designed to preserve and acknowledge the rich history of BTHS athletics and to sponsor events that give opportunities for former Bloom alums to encourage academic and athletic achievement of current and future BTHS students.

On June 2-3, 2017, BAAA will launch their 3rd Annual Summer Joe Chapman Basketball Camp This event will have scores of Bloom alums and friends coming together to inspire and give back to the current and future student-athletes of BTHS. During this year’s two-day event, area students will be able to attend a sports clinic divided into three themes of health, education/mentoring and hands-on athletic training (H.E.A.T.). These sessions will be staffed with experienced noteworthy Bloom business, educational and sports professionals. The health and nutritional component will be provided by St James Hospital’s Healthy Choices Program staff. This summer the Bloom Alumni Athletic Association plan on “bringing the HEAT” to our neediest kids!

The highlight of this two-day event will be the first ever game between Bloom Trail and Bloom Township high schools. Prior to 1976, Bloom Trail was Bloom High School’s, freshman/ sophomore division, but in 1976 it became a four-year school named Bloom Trail. That split created competition between the two schools that goes on to this day. Although the two schools currently compete as one athletic team, there still is a clear and persistent animosity in the minds of some. Liked to America’s Civil War, the game is played by players who grew up together and in some cases related, playing against each other. Thus, this game is affectionally called “The Civil”. To say this will be a meaningless game between friends would be a gross misunderstanding of passion surrounding this game.

And to underscore this passion and significance of this game, Terry Boers, sports announcing legend of Chicago’s longest running sports show is scheduled to be announcing one more time. In a recent Nielsen Audio survey, The Score ranked fifth in afternoons with a 4.4 percent share and cumulative weekly audience of 647,200. Terry Boers, was one of the main reasons for the show’s success. The ex-Sun-Times columnist plans to work on a book and occasionally write for The Score's site.

But, as he has retired, he has made a commitment to “come home”, and announce one more time at where his career started, Bloom High School.
