CRYSTAL LAKE, IL - A Crystal Lake liquor store was recently cited for selling alcohol to a minor during police department compliance checks. The Crystal Lake Police Department visited 80 businesses that sell alcohol in the city in April. Officers sent in a person under 21 years old to buy alcohol during the checks, according to a news release from the police department.

Crystal Lake officers cited the clerk/employee who completed the sale, according to a news release. An adjudication hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. on June 9 at the Crystal Lake Municipal Center, 100 West Woodstock Street.

During the April alcohol compliance checks, police checked businesses that sell packaged alcoholic beverages and those that serve alcohol for on-site consumption. Clerks or business employees at all of the businesses except for Sunrise Tobacco and Liquor appropriately checked the purchaser’s identification, recognized them as being underage, and did not complete the sale, police said.

With traffic crashes serving as the leading cause of death among adolescent Americans and teenage alcohol consumption a leading contributing factor, the Crystal Lake Police Department strives to develop partnerships with local merchants to help them achieve the goal of zero alcohol sales to minors, according to the news release.
The Crystal Lake Police Department conducts these Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement checks randomly throughout the year and will continue to do so in the future, police said.
