Coroner IDs 2 Killed In Wrong-Way Crash Near Gurnee

The fiery collision happened on Route 41 near Stearns School Road in unincorporated Gurnee early Monday.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Coroner's Office has identified the two people killed in a wrong-way crash near Gurnee.

Authorities say a Nissan Altima, driven by a 32-year-old man, was headed south in the northbound lanes of traffic on Route 41 near Stearns School Road in unincorporated Gurnee early Monday when the car collided head-on with a Ford Edge. The driver of the Nissan, who has been identified as Ronnie Goggans Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Ford, who has been identified as Ricky Smallwood, 54, was taken to Condell Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Autopsy results show Goggans, of Grayslake, and Smallwood, of Antioch, died from blunt force injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigation Team.
