3 Hurt In 3-Vehicle Crash On Route 31 Near McHenry

Firefighters freed a trapped driver after a work truck landed in a ditch; Route 31 was closed for about 90 minutes.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — Three people were injured, including one who had to be freed from a vehicle, in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on Route 31 near McHenry.

The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District and Cary Fire Protection District responded at 2:32 p.m. Wednesday to the area of Route 31 and Gracy Road in unincorporated McHenry for a reported crash, according to a news release from the Nunda Fire Protection District. While crews were en route, they learned one person might be trapped inside a vehicle.

Firefighters found the crash just north of the intersection, where three vehicles had sustained moderate to heavy damage. A small work truck had come to rest in a ditch, trapping the driver inside.

Crews extricated the driver, who was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries along with the truck's other adult occupant.

An elderly woman driving a dark-colored compact crossover SUV was also taken to a hospital with injuries that were considered moderate but not life-threatening. The driver of a white SUV involved in the crash declined medical treatment, authorities said.

Route 31 was closed in both directions for about 90 minutes while emergency crews treated the injured, removed the damaged vehicles and cleared the roadway.

The crash remains under investigation by the Prairie Grove Police Department.
