5 Kids Hospitalized After School Bus Crash

A school bus driver has been cited following the crash in McHenry.

MCHENRY, IL — Seventeen children were on board a school bus when the bus collided with a car at an intersection in McHenry Friday afternoon, police said. The students on board ranged in age from seven to eleven years old and five students were transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for precautionary measures, according to a news release from the McHenry Police Department. The collision occurred at about 4:08 p.m. at the intersection of Front Street and Anne Street.

An investigation into the crash shows a school bus for McHenry School District 15’s Department of Transportation was attempting a right turn onto Front Street from Anne Street when the school bus struck a 2002 Subaru Impreza, according to a news release. The Subaru was travelling north on Front Street at the time.

There were no passengers in the Subaru. The driver of that vehicle reported a minor injury and was transported by the McHenry Township Fire Protection District to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, according to authorities.

The students that were not transported to the hospital were reunited with their parents at the scene, police said.

The roadway was closed for about one hour while the crash was being investigated.

The driver of the school bus, Gary L. Garwood, 54, of McHenry, was cited for improper turning at an intersection and released at the scene.

The traffic crash remains under investigation.
