The National Weather Service in Chicago has extended a flood warning for the Fox River, including the Algonquin Lock & Dam tailwater, as water levels continue to rise.
Moderate flooding is already occurring along the river from Johnsburg downstream to St. Charles, affecting parts of Algonquin, East Dundee, Carpentersville and Elgin.
As of 8:30 p.m. Monday, the river stage at the Algonquin Lock & Dam measured 11.8 feet, well above the 9.5-foot flood stage. Forecasters say the river will continue rising slowly through the week and could reach major flood stage between Wednesday night and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service said the forecast is based largely on rain that has already fallen, with little additional precipitation expected over the next 24 to 48 hours. However, any new rainfall could change river forecasts, according to the National Weather Service.
Residents living along the Fox River are urged to monitor conditions and take precautions to protect life and property.
