Apple butter is a traditional food in the United States that was made every year in the fall as a means of preserving apples. The process of making this popular spread can take as long as 10-12 hours of cooking alone. For this reason, making apple butter often became a time for friends and family to gather and socialize while helping to peel the apples and stir the pot.
Join us at the at Colonel Palmer House on Sat, Sept 14, Noon-4 pm as we use the apples from our certified “Johnny Applesee” Apple Tree to make some apple butter the old fashioned way. The Colonel Palmer House, 660 E. Terra Cotta Ave in Crystal Lake was built c.1858 by settlers Gustavus and Henrietta Palmer. Located on its original site, the home was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Currently the home is maintained by the Crystal Lake Park District and is home to the Crystal Lake Historical Society.
