CARY, IL — A 23-year-old armed robber is behind bars after he stole cash and a bottle of soda from a gas station in Cary Tuesday night and then proceeded to crash his sports utility vehicle while fleeing the scene.

Police took him into custody the following day after they responded to what they thought was an unrelated medical call, Scott Naydenoff, deputy chief of support services for the Cary Police Department, told Patch in an email response.

Bryan J. Leider told authorities he had an ankle injury, and officers noticed he resembled the man involved in the armed robbery at the Marathon Gas Station, 8 E. Main Street, at about 10:05 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say Leider entered the gas station at that time and showed the clerk that he was carrying a pistol in the waistband of his pants.

He is accused of then demanding money and leaving the gas station with the cash and a bottle of soda. He got into a white sports utility vehicle and then crashed the SUV into a traffic signal and a sign at a private business at First Street and Route 14, according to a news release from the Cary Police Department.

He was last seen fleeing the crash scene on foot, heading south across Route 14. Officers searched the area, utilizing police K9 to try and track him down, but did not find him, according to the news release.

On Wednesday morning, patrol officers were dispatched for the medical call.

"In the course of investigating the incident, officers recognized similarities in the description of a subject involved in the incident, and the offender from the armed robbery. Further investigation revealed evidence connecting the subject to the armed robbery," according to the news release from the Cary Police Department.

Authorities did not say what the evidence was that linked him to the robbery.

Leider has been charged with aggravated armed robbery and is being held at the McHenry County Adult Correction Facility as he awaits a bond hearing.
