Army Vet Dies After Short Battle With Virus: COVID Memorial

MCHENRY, IL — An army veteran who worked at the Sam's Club in Crystal Lake for many years died in November after a short battle with COVID-19.

James R. "Jim" Smith is being remembered by his brother, Robert Smith, as caring, thoughtful and kind-hearted. Robert Smith recently shared news about his brother's death as part of the Patch.com COVID virtual memorial.

Jim died on Nov. 4 at age 79 Glenbrook Hospital after "a short battle with COVID-19," according to his obituary. He was residing at Citadel Nursing Home in Skokie prior to being transferred to the local hospital.

"He was in no pain and was comfortable," according to his obituary.

Jim Smith was born on the southwest side of Chicago and later moved to McHenry to be closer to family. He "served his country proudly" as an army veteran.

His remains will be buried at the Veterans Abraham Lincoln Cemetery in southern Illinois.
