Attempted Murder Charge Filed In McHenry Shooting

The 33-year-old Chicago man is accused of shooting a 35-year-old man in both of his legs in an apartment in McHenry earlier this month.

MCHENRY, IL — A 33-year-old Chicago man has been charged with attempted murder for allegations he shot an acquaintance in both of his legs during an argument in an apartment in McHenry last week.

Michael D. Harris, of the 3800 block of Van Buren Street in Chicago, also faces aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon charges in connection with the May 16 shooting in the apartment in the 1900 block of Orleans Street in McHenry.

Authorities say they were called to the apartment at about 10:30 a.m. for the reported shooting and found a 35-year-old man with gunshot wounds to both of his legs. The man was first transported by ambulance to a local hospital and then flown to Condell Medical Center for further treatment of injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

He was released from the hospital the next day.

Following an investigation into the incident, authorities learned the man went with Harris to the apartment complex on the morning of May 16 to visit a mutual acquaintance. A fight followed between Harris and the man and Harris got out a gun and intentionally shot the man, authorities said.

He then left the apartment before police arrived, according to a news release.

An arrest warrant was issued for Harris, and on Sunday, he was stopped for a traffic violation in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, and taken into custody without incident. He is being held by the Dane County Sheriff's Office and will be extradited to McHenry County to face charges.
