Author Visits with Joni
“Kids love meeting
Authors“ When my
first book got
published, I was
working on the school
Reading Team and
took it into each
classroom to read the
story and let the
children ask
questions. While I sat
on a desk in a fourth
grade class, next to
me say a boy, he was
just kind of staring at
me, I looked to him
and said, “Are you
alright?” and he
replied, “Yea, I just
never met a real
author before”.
Choose a Grade Level:
A few years ago I had met with the school Social Worker and we were trying to
schedule a visit with me and discuss the Characters of Character. In her school the
grades were K-5 and she thought that the 5th graders might think the characters
were just cute and not relate well to them. Well, as I spoke with the different grade
levels, low and behold came the fifth graders to listen to me. To my surprise, they
liked talking and listening to what I had to say, as a matter of fact the character that
we focused on was Self-Esteem Elephant. I shared that having self-esteem and to
be proud of yourself did not mean academically. Soon, the students were sharing
what they were good at and their peers got to learn a lot about one another that
morning. This is what the Principal had to say:
It is a real pleasure to recommend Mrs. Joni Downey’s program on Character
Development. We had numerous positive comments in regards to Mrs. Downey’s
presentation to kindergarten through fifth grade students at Canterbury School.
Our students loved her characters, which include, Manners Monkey and Friendship
Frog. All of her characters help children in making good decisions.
We had some hesitation about including the fifth grade students in the
presentation; however, we found that Mrs. Downey does an excellent job of
adapting her presentation to the age of the students.
It is a very exciting to have someone in our community publish a book, as well as a
Character Education Program.
