Become an Oak Keeper and Save an Ecosystem
The Land Conservancy of McHenry County wants to give landowners the tools to care for their oak habitats.

Do you have oak trees on your property? This spring and fall, The Land Conservancy of McHenry County (TLC) will offer a series of Oak Keeper workshops for those interested in nurturing the health of their oak trees, as well as the surrounding habitat. TLC places an emphasis on oak ecosystem preservation in McHenry County, and there are many reasons for that! Since the 1800s, oak coverage has declined by 87 percent. Logging, development and competition from invasive species are just a few of the challenges that have led to the loss of our majestic oaks.
Much of McHenry County’s remaining oak habitats are privately owned. TLC wants to give landowners the tools to care for their oak habitats, ensuring that this icon of our home will remain an ecological mainstay for generations to come. Also, oaks support more than 500 species of plants and animals, including butterflies, migratory birds and even the fleeting beauty of spring wildflowers. Oaks can even help fish! The shade from their spreading branches lowers water temperatures in streams, improving conditions for aquatic life.
How can you help? Attend TLC's Oak Keeper series of workshops. The spring kickoff will be held Saturday, May 18 at 10:00 a.m. at a beautifully restored and privately owned oak habitat in Marengo. All are invited, light refreshments will be served and registration is free at www.ConserveMC.org.
Explore a woodland amidst the blooming spring wildflowers, meet the owner and hear the 15-year story to save this property. Additional workshops will be offered in the Harvard area in August and September, giving you the hands-on skills and inspiration to begin your restoration journey. Become an Oak Keeper, receive a six-month free membership to TLC, and help nurture our county’s next generation of oaks!
