ESQ was originally formed to introduce elementary school students to string instruments. The quartet has performed for schools from Gages Lake to Woodstock to St. Charles. They have also coached middle school and high school chamber groups. ESQ is short for Elgin String Quartet. The name was given to the quartet by an elementary student who insisted the group have a name.

Members of ESQ are also members of the Elgin Symphony. They are freelance musicians who work all over Northern Illinois and Wisconsin and have played with such groups as Joffrey Ballet, Chicago Sinfonietta, Milwaukee Ballet and the Milwaukee Symphony. In various orchestra settings they have been fortunate to share the stage with a variety of artists including Yo-Yo Ma, The Three Tenors and Johnny Mathis.
