Blizzard Warning Issued For McHenry Co.: Some Schools Announce Closures

Heavy snow, strong winds, and icy roads expected; travel advised only for emergencies, with some area schools already closing Monday.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL —A blizzard warning has been issued for parts of northern Illinois, including McHenry County, as a powerful winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow, strong winds and dangerous travel conditions to the area.

The warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday for McHenry County.

Forecasters say blizzard conditions are expected, with 3 to 5 inches of snow, a light glaze of ice and wind gusts of up to 45 mph possible. The combination of falling and blowing snow could create whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous, according to the National Weather Service.

Officials warn roads will likely become slick and hazardous, and conditions could severely impact the Monday morning commute. Strong wind gusts may also bring down tree branches and reduce visibility for drivers.

The National Weather Service advises residents to avoid travel unless it is an emergency. Anyone who must travel should carry a winter survival kit and remain with their vehicle if they become stranded.
