This week, Cary Patch puts In Home Personal Services in the business spotlight.

Local editor Quincy Hodges sits down with Michael Collura, President and CEO of In Home Personal Services, for a Q&A session.

 What does In-home personal services do?

We are a senior home-care provider. We provide medical and non-medical services to seniors in the comfort of their own home.

We do this through Medicare as well as through private-pay. We’re one of the largest agencies in the area that can provide a complete continuum of care to a senior. We work from Chicago to Rockford and all over the state of Illinois to do that.

The care is safe and affective and necessary to many seniors, who want to gain independence.

How does the contact process work?

Most people contact us directly because we can go through private insurances or we can go through veterans’ benefits and there is some state-aid as well as Medicare.

It’s always best to contact someone who’s familiar with the process because we get contacted by a lot of families who’s caring for an aged loved one and they don’t know how to read the insurance policy and don’t understand want benefits are included.

My staff is trained to identify that and we can help them.

Any restrictions your staff has for providing care to senior citizens?

The department of health regulates us even from the private duty level, which means the non-medical level.

There are limitations of what our staff can provide. I can’t have a care-giver acting as a nurse, however, once they cross that threshold, our other company, which is Medicare-certified has skilled nursing that can take over.

So there is no limitation of what we can provide in the home, short of surgery, we can do everything for them in their home.

How is your in-home staff trained?

My caregiver staff is trained in a very unique fashion. We have the only training center in the state of Illinois. The state requires eight hours of training annually for a non-medical caregiver.

We do four days minimal training before they are placed with a senior. This training includes all the necessary skills that it takes to provide non-medical care to a senior. Caregivers are trained to properly communicate with seniors, family members, nurses and physicians. They know when to call for help.

How long have you been around?

My mother has been doing this for 35 years. We officially incorporated in-home services as a brand back in 2002. According to the Department of Health, we are one of the largest private caregivers in the state.

Why would someone want to use your services?

Most importantly, we can offer our service and assistance at any level to a senior in someone’s family, which many agencies cannot.

Because there is such a large variety of care options out there and most people aren’t understanding really where they fall initially into these different service levels, its best to come to us because we can take care of everything as the well-being of a senior changes, we can continue to take care of them.

 We have the most advanced training available. Our pricing is extremely competitive.

What’s some of the feedback you have received from clients?

 Our feedback comes from all levels, families, clients and partners will have in the senior-care industry. We have never had a complaint. We get a lot of feedback based on our caregivers.

Caregivers are the number one compliment we’ve received over the years. We credit that to our training, supervision and our support we provide our caregivers.
