Cancer Survivorship Program Celebrates Second Anniversary

When Crystal Lake resident Diane Haber finished cancer treatment, she quickly realized the challenges of fighting the disease instantly don’t go away.

There’s an adjustment period. For some there’s grief and depression. For others, there’s the need to get reacquainted with a body that’s not the same due to surgery or treatment.

“Diane knew there was a need in the area for a cancer survivorship program,” said Suzzann Cummins, spokesperson for The Renewal Center – A Wellness Oasis for Cancer Survivors, which Haber started two years ago.

“After having cancer, some people feel they’ve lost their sense of identity,” Cummins said. “Some people have built a rapport with the staff members who treated them. They’re used to that Tuesday 9 a.m. appointment, and when it all stops, they don’t know what to do. There’s a ‘Now what?’ feeling.”

Cummins said The Renewal Center picks up where the medical providers left off.

“We’re standing on the other side of the bridge saying, ‘We can help you,’” Cummins said.

Haber has created a eight-week program, Cummins said, which take survivors through specific steps in get adjusted to life again. The program can be very emotional for some, she said.

“But when people get done, they have a more positive outlook,” Cummins said. “They have an idea of what their new life is going to entail, and they feel more secure.”

Right now, The Renewal Center services about 25 survivors. There are morning and evening meetings, to accommodate survivors’ schedules, and there’s also a survivors’ quilting group. Anyone in need of such services can visit the center this week during its second year anniversary gathering.

The center’s anniversary celebration is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 14, in the community event conference room where members typically gather at The Mental Health Board, 620 Dakota St., Crystal Lake.  The board has graciously agreed to allow The Renewal Center to use its facilities since Haber offers the program for free, Cummins said.

“People can come out Thursday and get an idea of what our program is about,” Cummins said.

In addition to refreshments, the celebration will include a silent auction fundraiser and the group will announce the winner of its quilt raffle.
