Cary's Thorntons To Add a Second Redbox Kiosk

About the same time last year, the saying they would have to apply for a special permit, which  gas station soon did.

But the station, located at 800 Northwest Highway, will be adding a second Redbox Kiosk for customers, after gaining Village Board approval Tuesday night.

In the past year, Cary and surrounding communities have lost a longtime national brand, Blockbuster. Founded in 1985, the home video and videogame rental chain had been a fixture in homes in the United States and Europe. 

Redbox, a company that specializes in the rental of DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, and video games via automated retail kiosks, will add a second unit at Thornton’s for users. 

According to the Redbox fact page, there are more than 29,000 locations nationwide.

With Blockbuster closing and no other video rental stores in sight, will Redbox pop up all over Cary? For now, businesses have to apply for a special permit to have a DVD machine on the outside. Whether the village considers changing that policy with the changing times remains to be seen.
