Conscious Cup Closed Following Blaze

The fire broke out Thursday night at the coffee shop along Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — Conscious Cup Coffee Roasters in Crystal Lake will be closed following a fire that broke out Thursday night.

An employee was roasting coffee inside the building at 5005 Northwest Highway when the fire started at about 11 p.m. The employee used two fire extinguishers to try and get the blaze out, according to a news release from the Crystal Lake Fire and Rescue Department.

Fire crews found the blaze in the exhaust duct work of the commercial coffee maker and were able to quickly put it out. Authorities said the building did not have a working smoke alarm or sprinkler system.

The coffee shop will remain closed until repairs can be made and the McHenry County Department of Health has given its approval for it to reopen, according to the news release.

The cause of the blaze, which caused $20,000 in damage, appears to be from the build up of roasting material in the duct work linking that ignited.
