Construction Could Start Soon On Mariano's Grocery Store

Developers are moving forward with plans to build the new grocery store in the former Sears building along Route 14 in Crystal Lake.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL -- The first steps in the construction process of a new Mariano's grocery store along Route 14 in Crystal Lake are expected to get underway soon. The Northwest Herald reports crews could get started on the 74,800-square foot grocery store and an accompanying 19,000-square-foot gas station in August. If plans progress as expected, Mariano's will open this spring in the former Sear's building at 105 Route 14.

The Crystal Lake Planning and Zoning Commission has approved a request for a special use permit to build the gas station on the north side of the store, according to the Northwest Herald. Elizabeth Maxwell, the city's senior planner, told the newspaper developers should resubmit a full permit soon that would allow work to begin on the grocery store building.

The 74,800-square-foot building will feature Mariano’s signature glass rotunda which houses the café area for customers. The store’s interior is unique to Crystal Lake, “offering an unparalleled shopping experience with a vast assortment of freshly prepared meal options and an extensive award-winning produce department,” according to a city’s news release announcing the addition of Mariano's to Crystal Lake.
