'Cookie Cutter' Neighborhood Sent Back To Developer By City Council: Report

The proposed subdivision in Crystal Lake would include 175 single-family homes.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — The Crystal Lake City Council is again asking developers to revise plans for a large subdivision proposed in Crystal Lake.

Pulte Homes wants to bring the 175 single-family home neighborhood to 63 acres along South Main Street in Crystal Lake — in the same location where an Amazon distribution center had once been planned, according to Shaw Local News Network.

The city's planning and zoning commission last month asked Pulte to drop four lots adjacent to a park in the central of the development, located at 275 S. Main Street, before coming back to the city for approval.

Developers recently came back to the city council with an updated plan and revisions but councilors sent them back to the drawing board again, requesting this time they make the homes "more cohesive" with a nearby neighborhood and referring to the architectural style as "cookie-cutter," according to the article.

Amazon had previously planned a 180,000-square-foot distribution center in the same location but walked away in 2022 before formally purchasing the property.
