Coroner IDs Woman Killed In Weekend Crash

The Elmhurst woman died in a two-car collision on Route 31 near McHenry, authorities said.

MCHENRY, IL — The McHenry County Coroner has identified a 56-year-old Elmhurst woman killed in a two-car crash over the weekend as Christina Smith.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday for Smith, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision Saturday morning, McHenry County Coroner Michael Rein said in a statement.

The crash happened on Route 31 north of Pioneer Road in unincorporated McHenry at about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday when a 2021 GMC Acadia collided with a 2015 Acura TLX , according to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office. Authorities say the GMC crossed the centerline while headed north on Route 31 and hit the Acura head-on.

Smith was driving the Acura and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the GMC, a 30-year-old woman from Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, was taken by ambulance to Northwestern Hospital in McHenry and then flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
