Coroner IDs Woodstock Woman Killed In Apartment Fire

The 63-year-old Woodstock woman has been identified as Gayle Enberg.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — The McHenry Coroner's Office has identified a 63-year-old Woodstock woman killed in an apartment fire last week as Gayle Enberg.

Enberg was pronounced dead inside her apartment at about 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 after firefighters found her body while battling the blaze in the 500 block of McHenry Avenue, according to authorities.

Authorities have not released a cause of death as they await toxicology results, according to a statement from McHenry County chief deputy coroner Olivia Zednick.

Fire officials believe the fire broke out in the living room of the first-floor apartment at about 1:20 p.m. on Aug. 4. The entire apartment complex was evacuated and the blaze caused smoke damage throughout the building.

The blaze caused about $100,000 in damage to the apartment, which sustained fire and smoke damage, according to a news release from the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District. Firefighters ventilated the entire building before letting residents back in, and no one was displaced because of the blaze.

The cause of the blaze, which does not appear to be suspicious in nature, remains under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office, the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and the Woodstock Police Department.
