Crystal Lake Coronavirus: School District Cancels Prom
"I have raised four teenagers, and I know from experience how difficult it is to disappoint our kids," the district's superintendent said.
CRYSTAL LAKE, IL—After Gov. Robert Pritzker extended Illinois' stay-at-home order through April 30 to help minimize the spread of the new coronavirus, Crystal Lake High School District 155 Superintendent Steve Olson recently announced the cancellation of prom.
"To our students, this decision was not made lightly as we know many of you look forward to this memorable high school experience," Olson posted on Facebook. "To our seniors, we understand this is an opportunity for you to celebrate your last four years together. But right now, in the midst of a global crisis, it would be irresponsible of us to allow you to participate in prom and risk your health and safety."
According to Olson, students who purchased prom tickets will be refunded. In a letter to families, he said he realizes many students may be upset by the cancellation; however, social distancing and limiting public contact remains a must.
