Crystal Lake Mayor Files For Re-Election
Crystal Lake Mayor Haig Haleblian is looking to secure his first full term as mayor during elections next spring.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — Crystal Lake Mayor Haig Haleblian will be running for re-election.
Haleblian was appointed as acting mayor of Crystal Lake in May 2020 after the sudden death of longtime Mayor Aaron Shepley. He was picked by voters in April 2021 in a special election to continue in the post.
On Monday morning, he filed to run for his first full term, the Northwest Herald is reporting. So far, no other candidates have filed papers to run against Haleblian. Haleblian had been a Crystal Lake city councilor for three years when he was picked to step into the role as acting mayor after Shepley, who served as Crystal Lake's mayor for 21 years, died in his sleep at age 56.

In addition to the mayoral position, there will be three city councilor seats open during the general election on April 4. Haleblian told the Northwest Herald one city council member, Cathy Ferguson, will not be running next spring.
Incumbents Brett Hopkins and Ellen Brady have filed papers to run for re-election as have newcomers Denise Smith, a local business woman, and Donald Kountz, who ran unsuccessfully for a city council seat two years ago, city clerk Nick Kachiroubas told the Northwest Herald earlier in the week.
