Federal Agents Had Authority to Arrest Men Outside Kane County Jail, Officials Say
Video of the arrests sparked questions online, officials said.
KANE COUNTY, IL — Federal immigration agents acted within their authority when they arrested two men outside the Kane County Jail on Sunday, according to Kane County State's Attorney Jamie Mosser and Undersheriff Amy Johnson.
The statement came after a video of the arrests circulated online, prompting questions about the legality of the action. Officials said the men had completed weekend jail sentences and were arrested by federal agents after leaving the sheriff’s office, the Daily Herald is reporting.
They also clarified that a sheriff’s deputy seen in the video, who authorities say was investigating a lost debit card and was not involved in the immigration enforcement action, according to the article.
