Former Coach Arrested for Sexual Abuse

Former middle school wrestling coach allegedly had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old.

Police arrested a former wrestling coach Friday who is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student.

Crystal Lake Police arrested Benjamin E. Flavin, 20, 1118 Viewpoint Dr., Lake in the Hills, on a warrant for aggravated criminal sexual abuse after staff reported to police May 12 they had information that indicated a 14-year-old female student may be engaged in a sexual relationship with a former, part-time wrestling coach at the school, police said. The charge is a Class 2 felony.

Police reported that at the onset of the school’s inquiry into the allegations, as well as the during the initial police investigation, the victim denied that such a relationship had taken place.

According to police, school officials and the police worked in concert to determine if the initial information was credible. The investigation confirmed that Flavin had a sexual relationship with the victim on or about Nov. 20 201o and the incident occurred in a residence located within Crystal Lake city limits.

"There is no information indicating that any conduct of a criminal nature occurred on school grounds or while school was in session," according to a release from the police department. "There is no information indicating that there were any other victims in this case and no indication that this incident occurred as a result of force or coercion."

Flavin has no prior criminal history, police said.

Flavin was arrested without incident. He was released after posting 10 percent of a $60,000 bond. His first appearance before the court has been set for 9 a.m. June 15.
