Fox River Corridor Plan Wins State Award

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — The American Planning Association - Illinois Chapter has announced that the Planning and Development Department’s Fox River Corridor Plan has won the association’s Best Practice Award. The plan, adopted by the McHenry County Board last October, presents a vision for the future of the Fox River between the Fox Bluff Conservation Area and Burtons Bridge, connecting a total of eight villages, unincorporated communities, and vast stretches of open space, according to a news release from McHenry County.

It reflects a shared vision that the natural environment, its economic potential, and recreational use of the river are interconnected, and serves as a guide for government officials, open space managers, environmental advocates, businesses and recreational users to make informed decisions about conservation, transportation and development, according to county officials.

The Fox River Corridor Plan was created through the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s Local Technical Assistance program, and county Planning Manager Kim Kolner served as project manager. Later this year, McHenry County will continue planning for the northern portion of the Fox River Corridor with continued technical assistance from CMAP, accourdng to the county's news release.

The award-winning plan will be recognized at the APA-IL’s annual conference Wednesday,
Sept. 25, in Evanston.
