July is Bring Your Own Bag Month in Crystal Lake

The program is aimed at reducing the number of plastic bags and educating the public on the benefits of bringing bags while shopping.

The City of Crystal Lake is partnering with the BYOBag Committee of the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County to dedicate the month of July as “Bring Your Own Bag Month.”

This program is funded by the McHenry County Community Foundation. The BYOBag Committee, which was first organized in the fall of 2013, aims to reduce the number of plastic bags and educate the public on the benefits of bringing their own bags while shopping.

Plastic bags derived from oil and natural gas use up precious resources and have a detrimental effect on the environment. When disposed of, plastic bags create litter, clog storm drains, add waste to our landfills, and harm our natural wildlife.

The BYOBag Committee is partnering with local businesses to help encourage residents to shop with reusable bags. The BYOBag Committee is asking local businesses to show their support by displaying signs and window clings to encourage the use of reusable bags and to reward customers for declining plastic bags.

Local businesses can also offer their own reusable bags for purchase in place of paper or plastic bags. BYOBag month will encourage a positive, environmentally friendly attitude for years to come.
