Area farmers and farmland owners with an interest in soil health and local sustainable agriculture will have the opportunity to network at the upcoming Common Ground Gathering July 11 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at Soulful Prairies Farm in Woodstock. Registration is $10/person. RSVP at www.libertyprairie.org/calendar or call Linda Balek at 815-337-9502.

The Common Ground Gathering is a casual social gathering that gives farmers and landowners the opportunity to learn from and connect with each other. It can also be a place for farmers and farmland owners to find a good land tenure partner, whether through a lease or succession planning.

“There’s a growing number of farmers and farmland owners around the region who care about the health of their soil, sustainability and local food,” says Linda Balek of The Land Conservancy of McHenry County. “We want to give them the chance to have a good time, learn something new and encourage each other on a nice summer evening.”

Guests at the event include Steve Tomlins of Turtle Creek Gardens, who will talk about his experience growing hemp, and Jim Copher with DeLong Seed Company, which is expanding its business line to include organic grains, as well as an organic grain farmer from Kane County.

Attendees will have the opportunity to briefly share their farming goals, ideas, wishes or news at this informal networking event. “This is the third summer that we are holding the Common Ground Gathering,” says Balek. “People really enjoy it and have made valuable connections that have continued beyond the event.”
