The Land Conservancy Launches Program to Grow the Oak Canopy in Harvard
Years ago, the City of Harvard, IL, like much of McHenry County, was once an oak woodland.
Years ago, the City of Harvard, IL, like much of McHenry County, was once an oak woodland. Over the years, many of its oak trees were lost to agriculture and development. Some old oaks remain, but their numbers are declining as they reach the end of their natural lives.
With a grant from the Morton Arboretum, The Land Conservancy of McHenry County (TLC) is rolling out a program in the City of Harvard to spread the word about oaks and the many benefits they provide.
Through outreach, education and planting of oaks, TLC hopes to reverse the trend of oak loss and inspire the current generation of residents to learn more about these remarkable trees.

The Benefits of Oaks
Oak trees provide shade in the summer, acorns for wildlife in the fall, and enhance the natural beauty of the area throughout the seasons. Oaks also offer habitat for a large variety of insects, which translates into more birds and wildlife to eat the bugs.

For Harvard Residents
TLC is sharing information about the program at the monthly Harvard Downtown Market and is also offering complimentary Conservation@Home consultations to Harvard residents. Those who book a site consultation are also eligible to receive a free oak tree or native shrub to plant on their property. The consultations include a site visit from a TLC staff member to note the invasive and native species present, and options for management, as well as provide information so that oak trees will thrive.
This program is open to homeowners, businesses, HOAs, churches and schools in Harvard, regardless of lot size.
A representative from TLC is also offering presentations, workshops and volunteer opportunities to Harvard-based groups on oak tree and land stewardship.
