MCC Men Fall Short, Women Notch Second Win

Big comeback by men not enough while women outlast short-handed Wright.

Down 21 with seven minutes to go, it appeared that men’s basketball team was headed for a blowout loss to Wright College Thursday night at home. However, the Scots would rally to pull within four but couldn’t get any closer in a 68-64 loss.

MCC (5-5) started slow, falling behind by double figures within the first four minutes before tying the game late in the half. Wright would go on a 10-0 run to end the first half and another 10-0 to start the second half to take control of the game.

Mershon Wilkes scored 17 points to lead the Scots. DeShawn Wash added 11 points and had 10 rebounds.

Scots hang on for victory

With winless Wright College in town Thursday night, it figured to be an easy win for McHenry County College’s women’s basketball team. It was far from that as the Scots were able to hold off Wright 61-56 in non-conference play.

After a back-and-forth first 15 minutes, MCC (2-8) jumped out to a 12-point lead by the half and led by six when Wright’s Chandra Carrasquillo fouled out, which gave MCC a 5-on-4 advantage on the court but were outscored by Wright 26-25 after Carrasquillo fouled out.

Alyssa Haayer led the Scots with 27 points and 15 rebounds while Jerrica Graham added 12 and Amanda Appner had 11.

The MCC women will also take a break for finals and will play again Saturday, Dec. 17, at home against St. Clair County (MI) at noon in a game that can be seen on MCC’s Athletics website at www.mchenry.edu/athletics.
