MCCD Opens Solar-Lit Trails For Winter Night Hikes
Cross-country skiers can also check out the trails after the sun goes down.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL -- For those looking for some outdoor activity during the cold, winter months, the McHenry County Conservation District will have two sites open for late night hiking and cross-country skiing. With the sun going down earlier, this might be the perfect match for active area residents. As conditions allow, residents can hike or ski until 9 p.m. every evening on the solar-lit trails at Pleasant Valley, Woodstock, or Hickory Grove Highlands, Cary, according to a MCCD news release.
The Pleasant Valley trail at 13315 Pleasant Valley Road in Woodstock is a short half-mile trail located on the east side of the entrance drive and traverses over relatively flat terrain, which is perfect for beginners or shorter outings. Parking is in the first parking area and visitors should sign in.
The trail at Hickory Grove Highlands, 500 Hickory Nut Grove Lane in Cary is a longer 1.25 mile looped trail that travels through a restored savanna, offering a longer scenic route with some hills and turns, suitable for intermediate skiers. Visitors should sign in at the trail head.
