McHenry 31 Democrats will host a Flag Day Celebration on Wednesday, June 14 from 5-8 pm at the Veterans Memorial Park picnic shelter, 3400 Pearl Street in McHenry. It will be a picnic featuring Kelli Wegener, McHenry County Board member for District 5, as well as a presentation on the American flag by McHenry County Regional Board of Schools Trustee Brian Meyers. Hot dogs, sausage, and soft drinks provided.

Flag Day was established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 to honor our democratic heritage and principles as embodied in the American flag. It is celebrated on the anniversary of the adoption of the first US Flag by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

The event is sponsored and hosted by McHenry 31 Democratic Precinct Committee Person Terry Kappel. “This informal event is an opportunity to celebrate our flag, hear from a great leader in our county government, and to enjoy some good food in the company of good people.” said Kappel.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs. The event is free and open to anyone interested in enjoying the program without being disruptive. Small flags and lapel flag buttons will be given away. Donations are optional.

Despite obtaining unanimous consent from the City Council for a one-day liquor license for what organizers had always stated would be open to anyone who wanted to attend, a reassessment of the license has been made by the Parks and Recreation Department, leading to this event being changed to an alcohol-free event.
