Weather Update: Blizzard Warning in Effect for McHenry Co., 'Treacherous' Travel, Closures

Whiteout conditions and strong winds make travel dangerous; up to 5 inches of snow expected before tapering late morning.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for McHenry County as winter weather continues to create dangerous travel conditions.

Snow and strong winds from overnight will make roads treacherous through this morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Roads across the county are currently covered in ice and snow, according to the Illinois Division of Transportation's winter weather conditions map. Drivers are urged to check the latest conditions at Getting Around Illinois before heading out.

Snow and Wind Conditions

Forecasters say the heaviest snow in McHenry County occurred overnight through approximately 7 a.m., with snowfall expected to gradually taper off by 10 a.m. Additional scattered snow showers are possible this afternoon and evening, though any new accumulation is expected to be minimal.

Total snow accumulations range from 3 to 5 inches, with the highest amounts near and west of the I‑39 corridor. Strong winds gusting up to 45 mph will create whiteout conditions, making travel hazardous, according to weather offiicals.

Tonight will feel more like the middle of January, with wind chills dropping below zero. Residents are advised to bundle up, especially if heading out early tomorrow morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The blizzard warning covers Boone, DeKalb, Lee, Ogle, Winnebago, and McHenry Counties, and is in effect through 1 p.m.

Safety Concerns and Precautions

Whiteout conditions could make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening, with strong winds possibly bringing down tree branches and causing power outages, according to the National Weather Service. Travel should be restricted to emergencies only.

Drivers who must travel should carry a winter survival kit and remain with their vehicle if stranded.

A blizzard warning indicates severe winter weather is expected or already occurring. Falling and blowing snow combined with strong winds will create extremely dangerous conditions. Residents are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

Closures, Delays

Most McHenry County schools have announced closures for Monday. These include:

  • Cary District 26
  • Fox River Grove District 3
  • Community School District 155
  • Crystal Lake District 47
  • Wonder Lake District 36
  • Marion Central Catholic High School in Woodstock

Community Unit School District 300 announced a two hour delay and the Crystal Lake Public Library plans to open four hours late Monday.

The Emergency Closing Center website lists some closures and delays, but it’s also a good idea to check directly with businesses or locations before heading out to confirm they’re open.
