New Scrap Food Recycling Option Available for Mill Creek Residents

The new pilot program is available at no additional cost.

GENEVA, IL - Mill Creek residents now have an opportunity to include food scraps with yard waste, provided they have an organics cart. The new pilot program provides added service at no additional cost and participation is voluntary, according to a news release from Kane County. If you live in Mill Creek and already subscribe to the two-cart service, which includes a trash and recycling cart, you can upgrade to a flat rate three-cart service, which will include trash, recycling and yard waste cart, for just $2.60 per month.

This amounts to less than the the cost of one sticker, which is$2.85. You can view the cost chart here. Nearly 1,500 homes already have the two-cart service, according to the news release. The yard waste carts are 64 gallon carts.

Why Mill Creek?

The Kane County Division of Environmental & Water Resources negotiates the hauler contract for the curbside trash, recycling, and yard waste collection program in the Mill Creek SSA to secure the lowest prices for residents and ensure quality services. This pilot is a great opportunity to start a program in Kane County.

The food scrap composting pilot was approved by the County Board on May 9th, 2017. This makes Mill Creek the 23rd community in the Chicago region to participate in residential food scrap composting. Like many of the other communities that have the same sort of “ride-along” program, residents will be able to separate their food scraps from their garbage and layer them in with yard waste in the organics carts, where they ride along to the compost processing facility, according to a news release.

This added ride-along service is being offered by Advanced Disposal for no added cost. It will not increase traffic or cause any other issues, as the same truck that is picking up yard waste will be collecting the added food scrap. And the food scrap is the same material as always, just in a different cart!

Residents who have an organics/yard waste cart will be allowed to simply layer the food scraps with the yard waste during the collection season - April through November. Advanced Disposal will deliver the material to Compost Supply, a permitted compost processing facility, where it will be turned into compost.
