Bail Raised to $3 Million for Retired Cop Accused of Killing Wife in McHenry Co.

A McHenry County judge on Thursday been raised the bail for a retired Chicago Police Department officer accused of fatally shooting his wife last week in Spring Grove to $3 million, according to media reports.

Lorin E. Volberding has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his wife, Elizabeth M. Volberding, 68. Authorities found Elizabeth Volberding with a gunshot wound to her neck in a home in the 10800 block of East Riviera Drive after a neighbor made a 911 call at about 1:23 p.m. on Friday, according to ABC 7 Chicago.

Lorin is a retired Chicago Police Department officer and Elizabeth also worked for the CPD for several years, ABC 7 Chicago reports.

Prosecutors on Tuesday requested a judge raise Lorin's bail from $1 million to $5 million, according to the Northwest Herald. A McHenry County judge met them in the middle, raising his bond to $3 million.

Assistant State's Attorney Robert Zalud said Lorin admitted to police that he shot his wife, according to the Northwest Herald. Police had been called to the couple's home in the past. In 2015, Elizabeth took an emergency order of protection out against her husband after he threatened to kill her and then barricaded himself inside their home for three hours when police arrived, according to the newspaper.

Elizabeth told authorities Lorin was diagnosed with acute dementia in December 2014 and also suffered from seizures, alcoholism and recently had heart surgery, according to the Northwest Herald.

Lorin remained in custody at the McHenry County jail Thurdsay, according to jail records.

He is next expected in court on March 3.
