Scooter Rider Critically Injured After Trailer Wheel Breaks Loose On Route 41

GURNEE, IL — A 60-year-old Park City man riding an electric scooter was critically injured Monday evening when a detached trailer wheel struck him on U.S. Route 41 near Grand Avenue, according to Gurnee police.

Officers responded to the intersection around 5:25 p.m. July 27 for a crash involving a Ford F-450 and an electric scooter rider.

Police said the preliminary investigation found the man was traveling northbound on the shoulder of Route 41 when a Ford F-450 driven by a 45-year-old Waukegan man was also traveling northbound while towing a trailer carrying a front loader.

During the incident, two wheels detached from the trailer, and one struck the scooter rider, causing life-threatening injuries, police said.

The man was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. The Ford driver was not injured, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The Gurnee Police Department's Major Crash Assistance Team is assisting with the investigation.

Police are asking anyone who may have captured the crash on a vehicle dash camera to contact the department. Investigators are especially interested in footage recorded near Route 41 and Grand Avenue around 5:25 p.m. Monday.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released when available, police said.
